CDBS Scheme

The Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) is an Australian government program providing financial assistance for basic dental services to eligible children. Here are the key details:

Eligibility

  • Children aged 0–17 years are eligible if:
    1. They are enrolled in Medicare.
    2. Their family receives certain government benefits such as the Family Tax Benefit Part A, or they are part of a family receiving other qualifying payments.

Benefits Available

  • Each eligible child can access up to $1,132 over two calendar years for basic dental services. This amount resets after two years if eligibility requirements continue to be met.

Covered Services

  • Examinations and X-rays
  • Cleaning and preventive care
  • Fillings and fissure sealing
  • Extractions
  • Root canals
  • Other basic services deemed clinically necessary

Note: Orthodontic work and cosmetic dental services are not covered. Services provided in a hospital setting are also excluded.

Costs

  • Many public dental clinics and some private practices bulk bill under the CDBS, meaning no out-of-pocket costs for families. If the provider charges above the CDBS cap, the difference must be paid by the family.

Other Important Information

  • Families will usually receive a notification if their child is eligible. Alternatively, check through MyGov or contact Services Australia.
  • Unused benefits do not roll over into the next two-year period.
  • Benefits are allocated per child; siblings cannot share the $1,132 limit.
  • Providers can check your child’s remaining balance and eligibility directly through Medicare.
