CDBS Scheme
The Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) is an Australian government program providing financial assistance for basic dental services to eligible children. Here are the key details:
Eligibility
- Children aged 0–17 years are eligible if:
- They are enrolled in Medicare.
- Their family receives certain government benefits such as the Family Tax Benefit Part A, or they are part of a family receiving other qualifying payments.
Benefits Available
- Each eligible child can access up to $1,132 over two calendar years for basic dental services. This amount resets after two years if eligibility requirements continue to be met.
Covered Services
- Examinations and X-rays
- Cleaning and preventive care
- Fillings and fissure sealing
- Extractions
- Root canals
- Other basic services deemed clinically necessary
Note: Orthodontic work and cosmetic dental services are not covered. Services provided in a hospital setting are also excluded.
Costs
- Many public dental clinics and some private practices bulk bill under the CDBS, meaning no out-of-pocket costs for families. If the provider charges above the CDBS cap, the difference must be paid by the family.
Other Important Information
- Families will usually receive a notification if their child is eligible. Alternatively, check through MyGov or contact Services Australia.
- Unused benefits do not roll over into the next two-year period.
- Benefits are allocated per child; siblings cannot share the $1,132 limit.
- Providers can check your child’s remaining balance and eligibility directly through Medicare.
